The Renetas Project collects tonnes in the 2024 season
The Renetas project is an initiative created by the Playa de Muro Hotel Association in 2023 and financed by the Sustainable Tourism Tax Fund of the Government of the Balearic Islands. This initiative aims to recycle and revalue the mats that are often abandoned in hotels, as well as to promote the social and circular economy.
Results of the Renetas Project to date
In 2023, the year of the project's creation, in the first season alone, the Renetas project achieved great figures in the collection and recycling of mattresses and floats, reaching a total of 5.4 tonnes collected.
This year the Renetas Project has provisionally achieved a figure of 7.6 tonnes.
This initiative of the Playa de Muro hotel association has been supported throughout its implementation period by the company Anysolution, which has contributed its experience in the implementation of innovative projects for tourist destinations.
The Es Garrover Foundation, located in Inca, has also played a key role in this project. It is a non-profit organisation that promotes the social and occupational integration of people with mental health disorders, raises awareness in society and supports diagnosed people and their families.
The people of the Es Garrover Foundation who have been part of the Renetas Project have been a fundamental part of the good results achieved during this season 2024. From their center in Inca they have been in charge of giving a new life to the mattresses and/or floats, collected from the hotels belonging to the Hotel Association of Playa de Muro, converting them into Upcycling or Zero Waste Products.
The 24 hotels in Playa de Muro that are part of the Renetas Project have also contributed important human capital to this project of recycling and reuse of mattresses and floats thanks to the participation of more than 300 workers in the training activities. In addition, these accommodations in Playa de Muro have been pioneers in purchasing the Upcycling products or zero waste products created.
Growth of the Renetas Project
The Renetas Project has grown since its inception, season after season has shown the evolution of the initiative with the good data of collection of mats and floats. It is important to note that hotels in other areas of the island of Mallorca and other areas of Spain such as the Canary Islands have expressed their interest in joining this environmental initiative promoted by the Sustainable Tourism Tax Fund of the Government of the Balearic Islands.
Next objectives of the Renetas Project
The main objective of the Renetas project is to last over time and create a new dynamic in the hotel destination, in this case Playa de Muro, where the beaches, sandy areas or natural spaces in front of the sea are free of this kind of waste. In order to be a sustainable destination where the nature and biodiversity of the area is preserved, as well as promoting the social inclusion of people at risk of social exclusion.
